Sir David Levene KNZM,OBE
1929 - 2021

Sir David was a New Zealand businessman and philanthropist.

He was involved in the establishment of Outward Bound
New Zealand, and through the David Levene Foundation co-funded
a professorship in neurology at the University of Auckland, and bursaries for students at Massey University for those experiencing financial hardship. In addition, the foundation has donated to more than 400 charities including North Shore Hospice and the Halberg Foundation.

This essay competition is a way of acknowledging Sir David’s extraordinary contribution to so many communities, his enduring legacy to the nation, and his commitment to social cohesion.
